Why Buy the 2018 Dodge Durango
With lots of cargo space, a wide range of trim configurations to choose from, and brawny engine options available, it’s hard to pass up an SUV like the Dodge Durango. It has also grown in size since its original debut in 1997; formerly a mid-size SUV, it is now full-size and more spacious. The 2018 model year, which occurs in the nameplate’s third generation of production, marks the debut of the SRT® as the top-level trim. Below it, in ascending order, are the SXT, SXT Plus, GT, Citadel, and R/T.
Exterior – Reasons Why Buy the Dodge Durango
Standard exterior features on the SUV include automatic halogen headlights, power heated manual fold-away side mirrors, fog lights, LED taillights, and 18-inch alloy wheels. At the GT level, 20-inch alloy wheels and a power liftgate are introduced, luggage-carrying rails appear on the roof, turn-signal indicators are added on the side mirrors, and the driver’s side mirror gets auto-dimming ability. At the Citadel level and up, the headlights have a leveling system, automatic high-beam control, and low-beam high-intensity discharge lights. You will need to get to the R/T to replace the halogen bulbs of the fog lights with brighter and longer-lasting LED ones, which also supplant the halogen bulbs on the headlights of the SRT®.

Although this SUV has three rows of seats, maximum capacity differs based on trim. The SRT® is the only model with second-row captain’s seats to set maximum occupancy at six; the others have a second-row rear bench-style seat to increase maximum occupancy to seven. Passenger volume is measured at 133.9 cubic feet. Standard cargo capacity is set at 17.2 cubic feet, even though you can expand it to 47.7 cubic feet with the third row folded down and create max cargo room at 84.5 cubic feet if both rows behind the front seating are folded down. To get at least a driver’s seat with 8-way power adjustability, 4-way power lumbar support, and memory positioning, go with the SXT Plus.
Six-way power and 4-way power lumbar support on the front passenger seat-as well as heating capability on the steering wheel, front seats, and second row-are extended to the GT. On the Citadel and up, 6-way front-passenger seat adjustability is upgraded to 8-way, the front seats also get cooling capability, and the seats are covered in leather. Standard comfort and convenience features include tri-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™ (new for this model year), Bluetooth® wireless technology, six-speaker Alpine® audio, two USB ports and an auxiliary audio jack for connecting mobile devices, and Uconnect® infotainment integration with a 7-inch color touchscreen. On the SXT Plus, the SUV gets a one-year complimentary SiriusXM® satellite radio subscription. Starting from the GT model, the vehicle has remote vehicle start, dual charging-only USB ports, and a universal transceiver for remote-controlling garage doors. On the Citadel, infotainment gets a major boost with an 8.4-inch touchscreen navigation system, HD Radio™, and a nine-speaker 506-watt audio system. On the R/T and SRT®, the nine-speaker audio is the Beats™ Premium Audio System.
Mechanical / Powertrain – Request More Information
The standard engine is the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, which provides 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. As the former top-level trim, the R/T uses the 5.7-liter HEMI® V8, which produces 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. And the new top-level trim, the SRT®, uses a supercharged 6.4-liter HEMI® V8, which generates 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Each engine is glued to an 8-speed automatic transmission, with the SRT® getting additional paddle shifters. You can choose between a rear-wheel drivetrain and an all-wheel drivetrain. On the SRT®, its all-wheel drive is accompanied by an electronic limited slip differential for better enforcement of sufficient torque distribution to the wheels, as well as Selec-Trac® for adjusting the drivetrain according to road and weather conditions. A four-wheel independent MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension combats the turbulence resulting from driving on less-than-smooth surfaces. The SXT Plus, GT, and Citadel get the “ECO Suspension III,” which features rear load leveling ability for even more cushioning. The R/T’s suspension is sport-tuned for a tighter, more exciting driving feel. And an adaptive damping suspension on the SRT® reduces the turbulence to an absolute minimum.
Safety – Why Buy with Safety Features
For protection in the event of a crash, the SUV comes with a driver’s knee airbag, dual front impact airbags, dual front seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and dual side curtains. Other standard safety features include traction control, electronic vehicle stability control, an accident response system, hill start assist, a backup camera, trailer sway damping, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, and a theft-deterrent system (which combines proximity keyless entry with engine immobilization). The SXT Plus trim and above have an additional rear parking assist system, a security alarm for the theft-deterrent system, and LED daytime running lamps.
