The Muscle Cars Go Electric: All New Dodge Challenger and Charger EVs

The e-muscle era is arriving sooner than we expected — as Dodge is set on reinventing America’s favorite muscle cars to electric vehicles by 2024. The Dodge Challenger and Charger have been staples in auto trends around the world for many years. However, that is all going to change once the gas powered Challenger and Chargers phase out to plan for an electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid, and third significant new vehicle redesigned around the muscle cars.

Continue reading to learn all about the new EV redesign of the Dodge Challenger and Charger and how they will differ from the internal combustion engine (ICE) versions.

The Classics: Dodge Challenger and Charger

The gas powered Dodge Challenger and Charger are two of Dodge’s most iconic vehicles, and for good reason. With both of these vehicles being a staple in motor trends over the past decade, this drastic transition to EVs has caused quite a bit of commotion in the automotive community. However, Dodge still plans to continue to prepare for the production of all new Challenger and Charger EVs by 2024.

The classic Dodge Challenger and Chargers are well-loved vehicles among the automotive community. From their recognizable, strong look, to their powerful and smooth engines, these cars have a reputation for being fast, flashy, and efficient. With their designs still closely resembling their counterparts from the 60s and 70s, these vehicles are timeless and buyers love their retro style.

Why Switch to EVs?

We know what you’re thinking, why would Dodge change such iconic cars? Simply put, this drastic transition is due to tightening fuel economy requirements and the rise of electric vehicle production and popularity. Every company needs to evolve with the trends, and Dodge is no exception. This shift into the era of electric vehicles has much to do with environmental initiatives pushing car manufactures to go green. This aims to minimize production waste and the environmental impact of vehicle production, while also contributing to fewer emissions.

Dodge’s Plan

According to MotorTrend, Dodge Brand CEO Tim Kuniskis has announced that Dodge will have its first ever pure electric vehicle by the year 2024, which will be followed by a plug-in hybrid model and an additional vehicle that has not yet been confirmed by Dodge. In addition to the new vehicles, Dodge has curated a two year plan called, “Never Lift.” This plan has a series of product-related announcements over 24 months to generate excitement from their split consumer base — those who are excited about the transition to EVs and those who are sad to see such iconic cars change after so many decades of being gas powered.

The All New E-Muscle Cars

Like we stated above, Dodge is set to roll out three brand new electric vehicles by 2024 — which is a big transition to such well known vehicles. However, Dodge has assured that they are producing these vehicles to please all buyers, wherever they fit on the gearhead spectrum. Let’s discuss these new models and what buyers should expect:

The All Electric Vehicle

Dodge has announced that their all electric vehicle will be powerful and quick, with up to 900 horsepower under the hood and approximately 500 miles in electric range. Many of the details regarding body, features, price, and drivability have not yet been disclosed. However, what we do know is that all of Dodge’s EVs will sport the Fratzog symbol that was used by Dodge from 1962 through 1976.

The Plug-In Hybrid

By the end of 2022, Dodge plans to have their plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in production. Though many of the details are yet to be announced, we know that the PHEV will offer a competitive range, produce less emissions than gas powered vehicles, and sport the e-muscle car look with the Fratzog symbol.

The Mysterious Third New Vehicle

Exact details of this third new vehicle have not been shared yet. However, Kuniskis has stated that the vehicle will be a very significant car at the end of the year.
