Vehicles With the Top Safety Ratings of 2023

Comfort, advanced tech features, and the overall driving experience are among the top considerations when shopping for a car. However, one of the most important aspects to consider when buying a car is safety. As technology has progressed and the need for secure vehicles has grown, manufacturers have stepped up regarding safety.

Features like automatic emergency braking, rain-sensing windshields and sign recognition help minimize crashes. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) methodology to determine the safety of cars includes side crash tests, crash prevention evaluations, and headlight requirements. The organization also recently added rear-seat safety criteria in its vehicle safety ratings.

But, which cars have the best safety ratings? Read on to find out some top picks based on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and IIHS.

RAM Vehicles

The 2023 Ram 1500 was given a five-star overall safety rating by the NHTSA. The extended cab models received four stars overall with a five-star in side impact testing and four stars for front impact and rollover resistance tests.

The Ram 1500 has automatic emergency braking technology and LED projector headlamps with high-beam assist. Automatic emergency braking (AEB) technology uses radar and cameras to help the driver determine if the truck is about to hit another vehicle or an object. If the driver fails to respond to multiple warnings or alerts, the AEB system applies an emergency brake to help avoid impact by slowing or stopping the car.

Jeep Vehicles

While manufacturers strive to make every car the safest, certain models top the list regarding vehicle safety ratings, and Jeep is one of them.

Previously NHTSA offered the 2023 Jeep Compass a rating of three out of five stars for rollovers and an overall four-star rating. Looking at the 2023 Compass safety features, the vehicle’s full safety suite is impressive. Besides its stability control and excellent traction, the car has seven airbags, including a knee airbag for the driver. Driver assistance features include rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, hill-start assist, a rearview camera, active lane management, drowsy driver detection, and forward collision warning. The car also has a surround-view camera, traffic sign recognition, park assist, and rear parking sensors.

One of the most popular Jeep models, the 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee, received a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA and a four-star ranking for front collisions and rollovers. In some categories, IIHS rated the Grand Cherokee as good and marginal in crashworthiness and headlights. Generally, Jeep models include crash-prevention technologies and driver-assistance features, giving them high vehicle safety ratings.

Dodge Vehicles

Dodge is shifting to an all-electric future with car models with numerous impressive safety features. From the Dodge Hornet to the Challenger, Durango, and Charger, Dodge models are automotive icons with high safety and reliability ratings.

The Dodge Charger received an overall score of five stars from NHTSA, four stars in the front crash impact category, and five stars for rollover and side-impact crashes. Dodge’s essential safety features include ABS brakes, traction, and stability control, tire pressure monitoring, six airbags, a rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, forward-collision avoidance, and a rear cross-traffic alert.

Chrysler Vehicles

Chrysler models provide luxury, performance, and great vehicle safety ratings. The Chrysler 300 has received impressive ratings in crashworthiness tests and a marginal rating for the front driver-side test from IIHS. Additionally, NHTSA gave the Chrysler 300 a four-star overall safety rating. The car side crash test received a five-star rating and a four-star for rollover and frontal tests.

The 2023 Chrysler Pacifica has an NHTSA overall safety rating score of five stars. Previously, the Pacifica received a Top Safety Pick+ award in 2022 by IIHS. Generally, Chrysler models’ safety features include all-speed traction control, side-curtain airbags, driver’s knee airbags, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, lane-keep assist, full-speed forward-collision warning, and adaptive cruise control, among other features.
